The inlaid marble floor of the Cathedral of Siena
the most beautiful … largest and most magnificent … that ever was made
Giorgio Vasari
An incredible and vast marble flooring, unknown to many, but of such extraordinary beauty that, in order to ensure its preservation, it is only on display for 2 months every year.
It is a complex work of inlayed marble, created through the use of mosaic techniques perfected over time from the 14th to the 19th centuries.
It consists of 56 inlays created by Senese artists of great renown, as well as by the famous Umbrian painter Bernardino di Betto, better known as Pinturicchio.
Techniques such as ‘graffiti’ and traditional inlayed marble were used in the creation of this priceless masterpiece, featuring precious local marbles, such as the gray of Montagnola, the yellow brocatel, the red of Gerfalco, and the green of Crevole.
A masterpiece worthy of discovery….
